⛰️ it's good to unplug

Good morning Reader!

My family spent the better part of a week and a half up in the Lake Tahoe region, near Fallen Leaf Lake. I barely had cell service, no WiFi, and loads of hiking and nature. I loved it.

This is the view from Mt. Tallac at 9,739′ above sea level:

It's important to unplug sometimes and get a bit of perspective on life without the interruptions. It doesn't have to be at 9,739 feet but I find that nature helps. And it doesn't have to be for a week and a half, even just fifteen minutes in the middle of a busy day can help too.

What's your favorite way to disconnect?

While we were gone, the Federal Reserve voted to keep interest rate flat though 3 of 12 voting members voted for a rate increase.

I'm also seeing a lot of banks increase their rates despite the Fed holding firm - Barclay's just upped their 12-month CD to 4.15% APY.

If you've been debating consolidating debt, I suspect rates are about to creep up. The writing is on the wall.

💲 Best Bank Rates (as of 8/4):

💰 High Yield Savings - 3.80% APY + $50/$400 from SoFi

✈️ Bumped from a flight?

When we were flying to Tahoe a couple weeks ago, the gate agents across the way were offering $2400 in flight vouchers if two people volunteered to be bumped.

I was shocked when I heard the offer and so were the other passengers seated around me.

As it turns out, the $2,400 offer wasn't that crazy.

💬 Would you do this?

Sam Altman suggest that parents could generate an AI podcast talking about the kids' day (after connecting your calendar to ChatGPT) have the kids listen to it on the way to school.

We have four kids, decently busy schedules, but I'd never do this. I feel like this outsources too much, the value isn't in transferring information but in talking about what we look forward to.

Tech is important and useful but give it too much and you give up too much.

Hi, I'm Jim Wang and I share my strategies and tactics for managing your money and enjoying more out of life.

I have been writing about money for nearly 20 years and believe that personal finance is one of those subjects that is made complicated because it benefits a select few. Our aim is to help make it easier to understand so that regular folks can use what we teach to take control of their money and build wealth.

Good morning Reader! 🙏 First, a massive THANK YOU! Your support and your votes pushed us into the lead in Debt.com's 2026 FinTalk Awards and we were able to win Best Short-Form Content! But more importantly than the award were your emails of support and love and thanks for these emails. It really means a lot to me to hear from you, thank you for reading! 💰 In financial news though, it's time for savers to shine. The Fed is meeting tomorrow and interest rate traders think there's an 92.4%...

Good morning Reader! A company recently reached out to me about their negotiation service. You give it all the bills you pay, they try to use AI to negotiate down the monthly charge, and you only pay if they are successful. (I'm not sharing their name because I want to learn more about it) I'm not entirely sure if they can help me personally as I try to negotiate one bill each month (that list has 12 targets). It doesn't always work. It doesn't have to though. I just give it a try and if it...

Good morning Reader! The 10-year Treasury is creeping up to levels we haven't seen since 2025 and the 30-year is around 5.27%. Rates are going up. Interest rate traders now see a 66.2% chance the Fed increases the target federal funds rate. If that wasn't enough, Japan's 10-year just hit 4% for the first time since 1996. That's important because with higher interest rates in Japan, the yen carry trade becomes less attractive. But, I'm not changing anything I'm doing. I'm decades from...
