💹 Don't sweat the small drops

Good morning Reader,

I make automatic regular contributions to our retirement at the start of each month and, sometimes, you get days where you invest and the market drops 0.70%. (which the S&P did yesterday)

If you've ever felt the twinge of annoyance (or more) at the market dropping the day you make a contribution, remember this - investing is a long game.

In fact, it's a Loser's Game.

Avoiding mistakes is the whole game:

  • Making regular contributions is more important than when you make them.
  • Making them before a drop that you can't predict - that's not a mistake.
  • You are avoiding the mistake of not investing and saving enough, which far too many Americans make.

If you've read this far - just as you shouldn't be bummed about a small drop, don't get too excited about jumps either. The market is set to go up today because of the Google anti-trust ruling... but we just keep on saving.

Have a great day!

📦 Amazon Ending Invitee Program

Years ago, you could invite someone to use your Prime benefits under the Invitee program.

As of October 1st, those freeloaders will have to get their own accounts as Amazon takes a page from Netflix.

🔮 Playing with Kubera

Kubera is a net worth tracking tool for high net worth individuals and one I've been playing with the last few days.

We reviewed Kubera a short time ago (the date on the article is when it was updated, not when we initially reviewed it), I had trouble getting over the $249 price tag.

But the more I've used it, I can see how its features suit high net worth individuals who have a more complicated situation to track and measure.

If you've felt that tools like Empower (free) or Monarch Money ($100/yr) were insufficient - look at Kubera. There's a 14-day free trial.

PS. The best ways to use your points it by taking advantage of transfer bonuses from loyalty program to loyalty program. I try to keep track of the active transfer bonuses here. When influencers claim to get super expensive flights for few points, they do this and scour the reward calendars.

Hi, I'm Jim Wang and I share my strategies and tactics for managing your money and enjoying more out of life.

I have been writing about money for nearly 20 years and believe that personal finance is one of those subjects that is made complicated because it benefits a select few. Our aim is to help make it easier to understand so that regular folks can use what we teach to take control of their money and build wealth.

Good morning Reader, My parents visited last week, the first week of the government shutdown, but their friends were able to visit various D.C. museums because they still had funding. Now most are closed. NPR has a good updated recap of what's being impacted as the shutdown enters it's 4th week. Has the shutdown impacted you? Good morning Reader, Did you know Amazon has an Alexa skill where you can ask it to send you samples? It's made by and after you set up the skill, you can ask Alexa to send you samples if they have them. I explain it on Instagram, which has decided to cut off my hair whenever I use a green screen. 🤣 You can also sign up to SendMeASample.com directly and request samples. Right now they're giving a sample of Chomps. (View this email as a webpage) ⏲️ It’s never too late When I was younger, I was...

Good morning Reader, If you're interested in a tiny side hustle, there's a group called PFS Buyer Club that helps source in-demand items for their members - usually these are limited release coins from the Mint. You buy a limited release coin for ~$110, they buy it from you for $140, and you make $30 as the intermediary. PFS Buyer Club is free to join. You won't get rich but I've done a few of these in the past and haven't run into any issues. Here's my review of the process. (View this email...
