🤖 something big is happening

Good morning Reader!

There's a very interesting article on AI written by Matt Schumer called "Something Big Is Happening." As someone with kids, one of which is in high school and trying to figure out the world and where he fits in, this is an especially difficult time.

If you thought it was hard to pick a major, now try to pick one that AI won't take over in a few short years.

The article really makes you think and I personally agree with the thought that "nothing that can be done on a computer is safe in the medium term. If your job happens on a screen (if the core of what you do is reading, writing, analyzing, deciding, communicating through a keyboard) then AI is coming for significant parts of it. The timeline isn't "someday." It's already started."

I'd love for you to read his article and let me know what you think.

📜 Do you need term life insurance?

This week's story about James Van Der Beek passing at 48 from cancer is a good reminder that it's never too early to think about life insurance.

There's a GoFundMe for the family (he has six kids!) because of the medical costs associated with his treatment.

Term life insurance is as simple as it gets - pay a premium, get protection for your family if you die, and it's relatively cheap the younger you start it.

It's there to help cover your liabilities in the event you can't... which is important for the folks who depend on you.

😡 Buying the Dip is for Losers

Trying to time the market is hard. The author of this next post, Ally Jane Ayers, got lucky and makes the case that you should not try to buy the dip.

FWIW, I agree with her.

Hi, I'm Jim Wang and I share my strategies and tactics for managing your money and enjoying more out of life.

I have been writing about money for nearly 20 years and believe that personal finance is one of those subjects that is made complicated because it benefits a select few. Our aim is to help make it easier to understand so that regular folks can use what we teach to take control of their money and build wealth.

Good morning Reader! You should watch this explanation of the Yen Carry trade and how its unwinding impacts our economy and your personal finances. As a long term investor, I am not adjusting my allocations or making any other significant changes. I will, however, make sure that my actual allocations match my targets. I believe in remaining informed, even if it doesn't affect my actions, because then I won't be surprised when something happens. The market is dominated so heavily by news...

Good morning Reader! Last week, a reader (Hi Gloria!) ask why I never list Vanguard's Cash Plus account in the interest rate roundup below. Here's my answer: I don't list the Vanguard Cash Plus Account because the yield is only 3.35% APY (that includes a 0.25% boost that they will remove on 4/30/26), which makes it lag behind most other banks. It's just not competitive. I love Vanguard though, I have most of our investments there, but the Cash Plus account isn't that great. Vanguard's Money...

Good morning Reader! Two days ago, our schools closed early because there was a big storm coming through with threat of tornados. Understandably, they didn't want school buses out there shuttling kids while warnings were in effect. The storm ended up not being nearly as bad and some clamored to Facebook to complain about the forecast... which I found mind-boggling. It's like paying for car insurance and then complaining you never got into an accident. Prepare for the worst, hope for the...
