🌊 Retirement savings waterfall

Hello Reader,

It seems like every year we get a new name for a weather event and this week it was "heat dome."

I was just in Dallas, Texas and returned to Maryland where it was hotter. It was 91 when I left Texas and it was 97 here! (My wife took a picture of our thermometer and it said 102!)

If you're experiencing the heat dome too (which hopefully is ending today), stay cool!

If in the wealth accumulation phase of your life, saving for retirement can be challenging because there are so many options.

(if you are closer to the retirement stages of planning, I will have more articles on this in the future as I help my parents navigate - please reply with your questions so I can prepare!)

Fortunately, there's a simple "order of savings" that you can follow to help:

πŸ’Œ States that don't tax retirement income

I wouldn't move because of tax reasons but if I were moving in retirement, I would include taxation in my decision making because there are some really favorable states (taxwise anyway!)

I guess I have taxation on the mind lately. 🀣

πŸ₯² How the tax code penalized marriage

I bet you've probably heard about how the U.S. tax code penalizes marriage... well, today you can learn how.

My friend Robert at The College Investor breaks down all the ways the tax code does it.

PS. I've been using a receipt scanning app called Fetch Rewards lately and it's been an easy way to earn gift cards. You won't earn a lot but it's always fun to optimize and turn trash (receipts) into cash (gift cards). Right now you get 2,000 points when you scan your first receipt.

Hi, I'm Jim Wang and I share my strategies and tactics for managing your money and enjoying more out of life.

I have been writing about money for nearly 20 years and believe that personal finance is one of those subjects that is made complicated because it benefits a select few. Our aim is to help make it easier to understand so that regular folks can use what we teach to take control of their money and build wealth.

Good morning Reader, In a few days, we'll be celebrating the 4th with good friends and it's a fun mid-year reminder that it's good to celebrate from time to time. How will you be spending the 4th? (View this email as a webpage) πŸ₯³ This is why rituals are important I wrote this article in the fall, hence the emphasis on pumpkin spiced lattes, but it explains how rituals can elevate every day experiences. It's a life lesson I try to bake into everything our family does and I think it works quite...

Hello Reader, Has summer started for you yet? Today marks the final day of public school for our kids and so it'll be chaos in our home until camps start next week. When I was younger adult, I thought you should have school in the summer. Between the summer slide and worrying about childcare, it made no sense. But as our kids are getting older, I prefer the summers off. It's good for kids to have fun. Education and academics are important but are they the most important? Eh... I'm not sure....

Hello Reader, What's the worst financial advice you've ever received? The worst financial advice I got was when a real estate agent tried to convince me to increase my house budget by 20% β€œjust to see what I thought about those types of houses.” I thought I could afford a $275,000 house and he took me to houses that were listed at $300,000+ because β€œI needed to know what a little bit more could get me.” This was during the housing boom in the mid-2000s. He said that because I had a good job...
