❌ It's OK to stop

Greetings Reader,

As of market close yesterday, the S&P 500 was back to where it started on the year (actually, up 18 points, or 0.31%).

For those who kept their regular investment contributions, you benefited from the volatility because of the tariff shenanigans.

Speaking of... the U.S. and China have put a 90-day pause on the tariff war. That's why the stock market soared earlier in the week and now we're back where we started.

All the more reason to remember that you need to invest early and often and don't touch it. 😂

❌ It's OK to stop doing certain things

When I started working, I tracked every last penny I spent. That weirdness got me into the New York Times. (it's still surreal... 20 years later)

But I haven't budgeted to the penny in many years. It no longer served me so I stopped.

It's OK to stop doing certain things that no longer add value to your life.

🏠 Contesting your property taxes

In Maryland, we get assessed every three years and in the most recent cycle, I contested our property tax assessment and saved thousands of dollars. It wasn't hard but it took time.

Then I learned that some states assess every single year!

It pays to contest but if you don't want to do it, a company called Ownwell will do it for you (in certain states) and only collect a fee if they save you money.

Lawyers have been doing this for years, now you can just hire a service online.

Raisin is a platform that negotiates higher interest savings and CD rates with banks and credit unions.

They currently have a new customer bonus, up to $500, based only on your deposit and you just need to keep the cash there for 90 days.

There is also a 3-month CD currently yielding 4.40% APY from Western Alliance so it's a great place to hold your savings.

PS. The FTC Junk Fee rule took effect this week - now airlines, hotels, and live event platforms have to show all their BS fees up front. No more hiding processing fees, shipping fees, document fees, and resort fees all the way until checkout!

Hi, I'm Jim Wang and I share my strategies and tactics for managing your money and enjoying more out of life.

I have been writing about money for nearly 20 years and believe that personal finance is one of those subjects that is made complicated because it benefits a select few. Our aim is to help make it easier to understand so that regular folks can use what we teach to take control of their money and build wealth.

Good morning Reader! Last week, a reader (Hi Gloria!) ask why I never list Vanguard's Cash Plus account in the interest rate roundup below. Here's my answer: I don't list the Vanguard Cash Plus Account because the yield is only 3.35% APY (that includes a 0.25% boost that they will remove on 4/30/26), which makes it lag behind most other banks. It's just not competitive. I love Vanguard though, I have most of our investments there, but the Cash Plus account isn't that great. Vanguard's Money...

Good morning Reader! Two days ago, our schools closed early because there was a big storm coming through with threat of tornados. Understandably, they didn't want school buses out there shuttling kids while warnings were in effect. The storm ended up not being nearly as bad and some clamored to Facebook to complain about the forecast... which I found mind-boggling. It's like paying for car insurance and then complaining you never got into an accident. Prepare for the worst, hope for the...

Good morning Reader! The Iran war is now longer and bigger than initially expected and it's going to impact your finances in ways beyond the stock market. For now, the biggest concern beyond the human toll is the price of oil. A barrel of crude flew above $100 earlier in the week, which hasn't happened since July 2022, before falling back down to under $85 yesterday. Energy goes into everything and so the longer the war lasts, the more prices will stay higher because of higher fuel and...
