πŸ“‰ Don't panic

Good morning Reader!

Ahead of tax season starting in just a few days (Jan 26), the IRS has issued IP PINs for this year. If you're concerned about tax identity theft, here's how to get your PIN.

Also, the Federal Reserve is set to meet next week and traders believe there's a 95% chance they keep rates the same. A small 5% chance they'll cut it by 25 basis points. As a result, we're not seeing any movement in savings and CD rates.

πŸ“€ How to avoid panicking in a volatile market

The stock market fell hard yesterday. Both the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ fell over 2% and the Dow dropped fell around 870 points.

Why? Mostly because of Greenland.

Well, I should say, mostly because of President Trump about Greenland and the international response to his fixation.

Not underlying economic conditions, which by some measures are worsening too, but because of that news and the potential fallout.

(that said, you should invest anyway)

Here's how to remain calm during these times of turbulence:

πŸͺ™ Don't hoard loyalty points

Here's a sad story of a person who lost 62,000 Dunkin' points when they changed their policy to expire points a year after they are earned. He lost about $260 and had planned to let his kids use it.

Do not hoard loyalty points! They can expire them, devalue them or the rewards redemption amounts, and you have no recourse.

I don't play poker online (I used to play 25+ years ago in college, but anyone who has played poker knows it's mostly really really boring) but this video has convinced me never to try it ever.

Reminds me a little of what's happening on event predictions sites like Kalshi...

Hi, I'm Jim Wang and I share my strategies and tactics for managing your money and enjoying more out of life.

I have been writing about money for nearly 20 years and believe that personal finance is one of those subjects that is made complicated because it benefits a select few. Our aim is to help make it easier to understand so that regular folks can use what we teach to take control of their money and build wealth.

Good morning Reader! Yesterday shows you just how impossible it is to predict the stock market. The Dow fell over a 1200 points (with other indices doing similarly) before recovering to a loss of just 400. Why? The war in Iran. But that started over the weekend, why did investors until Tuesday to have their panic? That's hard to say. But the best guess is that we expected something similar to Venezuela (US swoops in, snatches Maduro, conflict ends) but Iran didn't lie down. Longer conflicts,...

Good morning Reader! The news out of Mexico is scary and goes to show that things like that can happen out of seemingly nowhere. Granted, I don't follow the news in the region, certainly not cartel related, but it went from zero to 10 in an instant. I felt the same when we were flying back from the Dominican Republic over New Years. One day we're celebrating 2026, the next day we're watching the United States go insto Venezuela and seize Maduro. Flights out of Puerto Rico were stopped. We...

Good morning Reader! There's a very interesting article on AI written by Matt Schumer called "Something Big Is Happening." As someone with kids, one of which is in high school and trying to figure out the world and where he fits in, this is an especially difficult time. If you thought it was hard to pick a major, now try to pick one that AI won't take over in a few short years. The article really makes you think and I personally agree with the thought that "nothing that can be done on a...
