🤔 can the gov't take your stocks?

Good morning Reader!

It seems that every week brings a new economic crisis. Whether it's the Iran war or the Fed flattening the yield curve or more retaliatory tariffs with our largest trading partners, there's always something.

If you try to pay attention to it all, you're going to be overwhelmed. And it'll all be out of date next week.

When it comes to your money, have a plan and stay the course. Invest early and often, save for a rainy day, and don't let the news impact your mental state. It's the boring middle and that's OK, don't make it more exciting than it needs to be.

Not that you need it, but I'm giving you permission to ignore the news sometimes.

That said, RIP Dolly Parton. 💎

🏛️ Can the government just take your stock?

Kinda.

Here's an unexpected question a reader asked - can the government take your stock portfolio and sell it?

She included a news article where someone's shares of Amazon were legally taken by the government and sold.

The owner was able to get the proceeds of the sale but the price of the stock kept going up and the owner was not entitled to those gains.

😀 Remove your info from Google

Google has an awesome tool called Results About You. You enter your information and if Google sees it in their search results, they'll tell you and you can request its removal.

It doesn't remove the information from the source website (for that, consider Incogni or DeleteMe) but it usually gets it off Google, which is just as good most of the time.

Hi, I'm Jim Wang and I share my strategies and tactics for managing your money and enjoying more out of life.

I have been writing about money for nearly 20 years and believe that personal finance is one of those subjects that is made complicated because it benefits a select few. Our aim is to help make it easier to understand so that regular folks can use what we teach to take control of their money and build wealth.

Good morning Reader! I was chatting with a friend who works at a consumer products company and she's seeing consumer behavior change. More and more people are using a barbell budgeting strategy when it comes to their spending. This is where you spend spend more on high-end luxury while cutting aggressively on the basics. People are choosing to spend on the things that bring them joy. An example of this is when you choose to go out to a fancy meal on the weekend but during the week you're...

Good morning Reader! If you're concerned about gas prices, I have a simple tip - slow down. The faster you drive, the less efficient your car will be. And that means you are spending more money at the pump. Instead of going 70 MPH, go 60. It's also safer that way, up to a point. I wouldn't creep along at 45 on a highway but slower speeds means you have more time to react to surprises. Slow down and arrive safe! 💲 Best Bank Rates (as of 9/29): 💰 High Yield Savings - 4.20% APY + $400 Bonus from...

Good morning Reader! As we all expected expected, the Fed raised rates by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00% with officials expecting one more increase this year. When you combine that with persistently high inflation, especially energy because of the Iran war, we're looking at higher prices on everything. I was in California last week (sunny and hot Palm Springs!) and the gas prices were eye-popping: Diesel is over $8, which means heating oil is going to be expensive this winter, no matter where...
