πŸ“€ A site that only lists the best CD rates

Happy New Year Reader!

There aren't too many tax moves you can make once it's 2026 but one thing to remember is that if you haven't maxxed out your Roth IRA, you can do so up until tax day.

When you make a contribution, make sure you indicate what year it's for. If you don't, most places default to 2026.

Any big plans for 2026?

πŸ“€ Who is CD Valet?

You may have noticed a new section above where I list certificate of deposit rates as found through CD Valet.

You may be wondering - who is CD Valet?

They're a CD rate site created through Seattle Bank and they collect data from banks and credit unions across the U.S.

I break down who they are, what they do (they just list rates, you don't open an account with them), and how best to use them to help boost your savings:

3️⃣ 3 Things to Do Before Travel Abroad

If you're planning any international travel, make sure you do these three things (my short Instagram video).

  1. Photograph the bar code of your passport (then hide the photo)
  2. Enroll in the State Department Smart Traveler Enrollment Program in case something crazy happens
  3. Save the phone number of the US Embassy in the country or countries you’ll be visiting.

πŸ“œ Free tax filing options

The Trump Administration shut down the IRS Direct File program but there are still ways for you to file your taxes for free.

I updated our guide to this with the updated details of the IRS Free File program as well as other discounted programs.

You can't file until the 29th (and you should wait until you get all your forms), but good to be prepared!

Hi, I'm Jim Wang and I share my strategies and tactics for managing your money and enjoying more out of life.

I have been writing about money for nearly 20 years and believe that personal finance is one of those subjects that is made complicated because it benefits a select few. Our aim is to help make it easier to understand so that regular folks can use what we teach to take control of their money and build wealth.

Good morning Reader! The news out of Mexico is scary and goes to show that things like that can happen out of seemingly nowhere. Granted, I don't follow the news in the region, certainly not cartel related, but it went from zero to 10 in an instant. I felt the same when we were flying back from the Dominican Republic over New Years. One day we're celebrating 2026, the next day we're watching the United States go insto Venezuela and seize Maduro. Flights out of Puerto Rico were stopped. We...

Good morning Reader! There's a very interesting article on AI written by Matt Schumer called "Something Big Is Happening." As someone with kids, one of which is in high school and trying to figure out the world and where he fits in, this is an especially difficult time. If you thought it was hard to pick a major, now try to pick one that AI won't take over in a few short years. The article really makes you think and I personally agree with the thought that "nothing that can be done on a...

Good day Reader! You may start hearing the term K-shaped economy and wondering what it means. Companies that span the economic spectrum, like hotels and airlines, are seeing this in their business. (Marriott CEO just said this) It means that the economy is split in two groups and higher income households are doing better while lower income households are doing worse. It's the phrase "the rich get richer." Wealth inequality, measured by the Gini index, reported by the World Bank for FRED...
