📈 reminder: stock market isn't the economy

Good morning Reader!

The stock market is doing well but regular Americans aren't.

The S&P 500 is up nearly 9% year to date but...

... consumer confidence is not good. And as long as the Iran war drags on, the longer oil prices will remain high. And high fuel prices are bad for consumers.

I read someone make the claim that for ever week of the Iran war, we'll have a month of high inflation.

While the equation is never that simple, we're seeing inflation and it's heavily influenced by higher fuel prices.

As a result, we're seeing a possibility that the Fed raises interest rates this year.

All this is to say I think it's important that you play financial defense. Especially if you are in an industry where your job may be at risk. Check out the first post I share below.

🚨 How to Prepare for a Recession

There's no arguing that playing financial defense is a good idea right now. I don't know if there will be a recession but given how things look right now, you will not regret taking some of these steps even if a pullback never occurs.

It's like bringing an umbrella - if it rains, you're covered. If it doesn't, well, you're still covered.

🧳 Have Travel Plans Changed For You?

I was quoted in an Associated Press article last week about how our summer travel plans have been somewhat scaled back because of higher prices (especially fuel).

I'm curious if you've done the same?

Hi, I'm Jim Wang and I share my strategies and tactics for managing your money and enjoying more out of life.

I have been writing about money for nearly 20 years and believe that personal finance is one of those subjects that is made complicated because it benefits a select few. Our aim is to help make it easier to understand so that regular folks can use what we teach to take control of their money and build wealth.

Good morning Reader! Question: I've been experimenting with AI (specifically LLMs like Claude and ChatGPT) to analyze my finances. Is that something you'd like me to write more about? If so, what would you want to learn? We're seeing interest rates creep up a few basis points over the last week or so. 12-month CDs that used to be 4.10% APY and now are in the 4.15% or 4.20% range. 🔒 If you use Vanguard, they recently added a way to stop unauthorized ACATS transfers (previously you had to call...

Good morning Reader! It can be confusing to see the stock market at all time highs but not feel like you're doing well. That's because the "stock market" isn't the economy. It's just a collection of publicly traded companies, organized in a way that makes it easy for pundits to talk about. The S&P 500 is up close to 10% and it's mostly because of AI related stocks - tech companies, chips, etc. How much AI related spending have YOU been doing? So the market looks great but the economy might...

Good morning Reader! Last week, the Fed kept rates steady but they indicated that there was likely to be one rate increase this year. Trump wants rates to go down but the new Fed chair has said "not so fast..." Interest rate traders peg the chances of an increase at the next meeting at 36.3%. If you were hoping for a rate decrease, unfortunately it's not coming unless something significant changes. The 2-year Treasury bond yield is at the highest it's been since early 2025. The 10-year, used...
